For a lot of people, the biggest thing stopping them from hiring a personal stylist isn't cost. It's the fear of opening their closet to someone and being judged. Gab Saper, a personal stylist based in New York City, hears this question all the time. Here's her answer.

Short answer: No. A good personal stylist isn't there to judge you. Their job is to understand you, figure out where you are now, and help build a wardrobe that makes your life easier.

Will a personal stylist judge me?

According to Gab, the answer is no. As she puts it, it's not her job to judge you. It's her job to help you. Judging simply isn't how she thinks or works, and it isn't even something she has to hold back. It's just not part of how she does things.

What does a personal stylist actually do?

A stylist works to understand you and your current situation, helps you figure out how your wardrobe got to where it is, and helps you move forward. The goal is a wardrobe that makes your life easier, not harder.

Does it matter if my closet is a mess?

Not to a good stylist. Gab has been doing this for a long time and has seen every kind of closet: messy, clean, big, and small. Wherever you're starting from is simply the starting point.

Should I be nervous about working with a stylist?

It's normal to feel a little exposed letting someone into your closet. But a good stylist approaches it as a partnership. Gab points out that judging doesn't feel productive. Helping you get to a wardrobe that works does.

"A question I get all the time is, 'Will a personal stylist judge me?' And I'm very happy to tell you that the answer is no. As a personal stylist, it's not my job to judge you. It's my job to help you, to understand you, to see your current situation, help you figure out how we got here, and how to move forward to help your wardrobe be something that makes your life easier, not harder. And all that said, since I've been doing this for a long time, I have seen so many closets: messy, clean, big, small. I just don't judge. It just isn't how I think or how I do, and it doesn't feel productive. But it also isn't even something I need to suppress. It's just not how I do it. Hi, I'm Gab, a New York City based personal stylist, and you can work with me on the ProPass app in the App Store."
