You've kept up with your lessons, built your vocabulary, and maybe even kept a long app streak going. But when it's time to actually talk, the words don't come. Gabriela Huallanca, founder of Haku Spanish, hears this question all the time. Here's her answer.

Short answer: Lessons help you accumulate Spanish, but accumulating isn't the same as integrating. Fluency develops through repeated cycles of understanding, practicing, communicating, and refining with real feedback.

Why can't I speak Spanish after daily lessons?

According to Gabriela, many tools help you accumulate Spanish, but accumulation is not the same as integration. You can build vocabulary, complete grammar lessons, and keep a long streak going, and still struggle to hold a conversation.

Do language apps help with speaking?

They help with some things. Gabriela points out that apps and lessons can strengthen consistency and recognition. But selecting an answer on a screen is different from understanding a real person, forming your own message, and responding in real time.

How does fluency actually develop?

Through repeated integration cycles. First, you understand Spanish in context and clarify its meaning. Next, you internalize useful patterns and practice responding with support. Then you communicate real ideas and refine your Spanish through feedback and continued use. Each time the cycle repeats, recognition gets faster and your responses become more natural.

Do I need to master Spanish before I start speaking?

No. Gabriela says that's not how language develops naturally. We don't master everything first and communicate later. We understand, attempt, communicate, and refine. At Haku Spanish, she calls this approach Spanish fluency integration.
